Ed Miliband is now the leader of the UK Labour party, the party of Tony Blair.

The media has been getting at Ed Miliband.

Presumably, the 'powers that be' have decided to stick with prime minister David Cameron and his Conservative Party.

In other words, the system is rigged and the media tells us what to think?

Do both Miliband and Cameron play their parts in the game?

Or does Miliband not know what is going on?

Cunningham was an associate of the Ted Rothschild-linked Cambridge spy ring, which included the pedophile Sir Anthony Blunt.

Tony Blair, who is sometimes known as Miranda, attended a private boarding school called Fettes, in Edinburgh.

One of the people Tony Blair had contact with at Fettes was Sir Knox Cunningham.

According to John Rentoul's biography Tony Blair Prime Minister, Knox Cunningham would visit the school several times a year and he liked to visit the boys' quarters.

Blair loved having discussions with Knox Cunningham.

John Rentoul quotes one of Blair's contemporaries as saying: "Cunningham was the sort of man who liked boys."

Former Fettes pupil Lord MacLean, one of the judges at the Lockerbie trial, rallied around their former teacher, saying they do not have any recollection of him ever behaving in an inappropriate manner.

According to Martin Dillon's book "The Trigger Men", Knox Cunningham was homosexual and had links to people involved in a child sex abuse ring.

This child-abuse ring operated in Labour-run Islington, the part of London where Tony Blair once lived.

Reportedly, the ring supplied boys to top people.

The close male relative of Baby P reportedly recruited boys from children's homes in Islington for the child-abuse ring, according to a secret report seen by The Mail on Sunday.

In the early 1990s, the relative, as a boy, was put in a children's home, in Labour-run Islington, in London.

All 12 of the children's homes in Islington were being used by the child-abuse ring, which reportedly had links to top people.

This ring included three pimps called Alan, John and George.

Reportedly, the relative, then aged 13, was persuaded, by money, drugs and threats, to supply the pimps with young boys.

The relative tried to blow the whistle.

Reportedly, the relative told social workers the names of boys who were being ferried from the children's homes to various parts of London (Manor Park, Tottenham, Soho and Westminster) to ‘be buggered by old men’.

Reportedly, none of the men were put under surveillance or questioned.

Whistleblowing Social worker Neville Mighty, who had received death threats, named the relative in a report.

Neville Mighty contacted Islington’s then director of children’s services, Lyn Cusack, who is married to a senior policeman.

In June 1992, Mighty was sacked.

Liz Davies, the senior Islington social worker who encouraged Mighty to go public, said:

'We got too close. There were too many powerful people involved.

'Child sex, pornography and sadism are extremely lucrative industries.'

In 1994, an independent report criticised the failure of police and social workers to help the relative.

Bryn Estyn - one of many children's homes linked to child-abuse

On 2 March 2008, Eileen Fairweather at the The Mail on Sunday had an excellent news story entitled 'I have known about Jersey paedophiles for 15 years,' says award-winning journalist.

Eileen Fairweather described the links between child abuse in Islington in London and child abuse on the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. She also suggests possible cover-ups by top police and politicians.

According to the Mail on Sunday article:

1. About 15 years ago, Detective Constable Peter Cook uncovered a child sex ring, with victims in both Britain and Jersey.

Cook's police bosses barred Cook from alerting police abuse specialists in London. Inquiries by junior detectives were closed down by senior police officers.

The child abuse ring members included an aristocrat, clerics and a social services chief. Their friends included senior police officers.

Cook managed to meet people at the National Criminal-Intelligence Squad. Little happened.

2. In February 2008, 'a child's remains' were found at a former children's home on Jersey.

More than 200 children who lived at Haut de la Garenne have described sexual and physical torture dating back to the Sixties.

3. There are the links between the child abuse at care homes in Islington, North London, and the child abuse on Jersey.

14-year-old Jason Swift, killed in 1985 by a paedophile gang, is believed to have lived in Islington council's Conewood Street home.

Two sources claimed this.

Every one of Islington's 12 care homes included staff who were paedophiles, child pornographers or pimps.

Police secretly confirmed that several Islington workers were 'major operators in the supply of children for abuse and pornography'.

Islington children were taken to Jersey 'on unofficial visits'.

Government Minister Margaret Hodge, then council leader in Islington, denounced "gutter journalists" who supposedly bribed children to lie about abuse.

5. Jersey social worker Simon Bellwood was sacked in 2007 after speaking out.

Jersey health minister Stuart Syvret was sacked after publicising a suppressed report into abuse allegations.

6. In June 1991, police in Cambridgeshire raided the home of Neil Hocquart who abused children in Britain and Guernsey.

Hocquart, along with a social worker from Jersey, supplied child pornography to a huge sex ring.

Hocquart, nee Foster, was abused while in care in Norfolk and was eventually 'befriended' by Captain H. Hocquart of Vale, in Guernsey.

Cambridgeshire police and a Scotland Yard squad raided Neil Hocquart's Swaffham Manor home in June 1991.

At nearby Ely they found his friend, Walter Clack, who was also reportedly involved with child pornography.

Police did not get a chance to properly interview these men. Hocquart died suddenly and Clack 'escaped with a £5,000 fine'.

Scotland Yard detectives related that they found at least "two or three" wills of older men who died of apparent heart attacks shortly after leaving everything to Neil Hocquart.

These deaths were never investigated.

7. Nicholas John Rabet, born on Jersey, was a friend of Hocquart's. Rabet became a childcare worker on Jersey.

Later, Rabet became deputy superintendent of islington council's home at 114 Grosvenor Avenue.

Rabet became a key supplier of children from Islington's care homes to paedophile rings.

Rabet and a colleague took children on trips to Jersey.

'Allegations mounted but nothing was done'.

Rabet befriended the widow of an American oil millionaire. This lady died after writing her will in Rabet's favour. Rabet inherited a property in Sussex, where he opened a children's activity centre. Children in Islington's care were regularly invited to stay there.

Hocquart and Walter Clack became "volunteers" at this activity centre.

Hocquart befriended one young boy called Shane (not his real name) who stayed at an islington care home.

Sussex police raided Rabet's children's centre and then contacted Shane, at his Islington children's home. Shane confirmed months of 'abuse'. Attempts to investigate further 'were thwarted by Islington Council'.

Islington 'falsely told Sussex officers it had no file material on Rabet or his alleged victim'.

The independent White inquiry into the abuse in Islington children's homes found that "at assistant director level . . . many confidential files were destroyed by mistake, although there is no evidence of conspiracy."

During the Rabet investigation, Islington refused to interview any other children in care or help Sussex police identify other children in Rabet's photos.

Police decided not to prosecute.

Shane told journalist Eileen Fairweather: "This goes right to the top. You have no idea how big this is."

Fairweather writes: "Third World police... succeeded where Britain's finest in Cambridgeshire, Sussex, London and Jersey had failed."

Rabet was arrested in Thailand in 2006 and charged with abusing 30 boys, some as young as six. Thai police believed he had abused at least 300.

Rabat was never tried. He died suddenly on 12 May 2006.

8. Two other Jersey-born social workers also worked in Islington.

One arranged sailing trips to Guernsey; the other sent children to Rabet's centre. Both were accused of abuse.

9. When Detective Constable Cook travelled to Guernsey, he met two brothers whom Hocquart 'delivered to a high-ranking, respected local man to rape'.

Reportedly no action was taken by senior police.

Jason Swift

In 1985, 14-year-old Jason Swift was killed by a child-abuse gang.

Jason is believed to have lived in Islington council's Conewood Street children's home. (Jersey child abuse link to Islington, London)

Sidney Cooke, Leslie Bailey, Robert Oliver, and Lennie Smith, were imprisoned in 1989 for the manslaughter of Jason Swift.

Cooke and his gang had sexually tortured and prostituted a number of boys.

The gang is believed to have killed at least nine children.[2]

Cooke was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

In 1998, Cooke was let out of prison eight years early.

There have been allegations that very powerful people have been involved in a child-abuse ring connected to Islington children's homes. ( Jersey child abuse link to Islington, London)

In 1982 Margaret Hodge (nee Oppenheimer) became Islington council leader.

She became a close friend of Tony Blair, who lived in Islington, a few doors away from Hodge.

In February 1990 Liz Davies and David Cofie, senior social workers, discovered evidence of sex abuse of children and reported it to a residents' meeting attended by Mrs Hodge.

In May 1990 Mr Cofie and Ms Davies were told by Lyn Cusack, assistant director of social services, to stop interviewing children about the abuse claims.

On 1 May 1997 Tony Blair moved from Islington to Downing Street.

The Independent, 9 March 2008, has an article on missing children (Our children are missing: Most vulnerable youngsters are targeted) which tells us the following:

Sarah Benford, 14, disappeared from Welford House children's home in Northampton in April 2000.

She is still missing.

The UK's Police National Missing Persons Bureau has 1,418 "open cases" of missing children.

According to Police figures more than 100 children who should be in care have been missing for at least four years.

Many children who go missing are not reported to the police.

Member of parliament Helen Southworth says: "All figures on children missing from anywhere are estimates because, astonishingly, there is no requirement for data to be recorded or collected nationally."

Almost 1,000 children went missing from UK residential and foster care in 2007.

The number that went missing from care increased from 570 in 1997 to 950 in 2007.

The UK riots look as if they benefit 'The Establishment', which means both Labour and Conservative.

The English Riots: Who Benefits?

Canspeccy speculates that elements of the government may have organised the riots in order to advance their agenda.

Tanks in Glasgow, in 1919, ready to shoot the people. "The seriousness of the government's intent can be gauged from Regulation 965 about how to deal with 'civil unrest': 'It is undesirable that firing should take place over the heads of the rioters or that blank ammunition should be used.'" - BBC NEWS.

The riots give the 'powers that be' a chance to crack down on those who might organise against the wealthy elite.

Max Hastings, a friend of the military, explains the thinking of the rich elite (UK riots 2011: Liberal dogma.):

"An underclass has existed throughout history...

"Its spasmodic outbreaks of violence, especially in the early 19th century, frightened the ruling classes.

"Its frustrations and passions were kept at bay by force and draconian legal sanctions."

We can now expect more force and draconian legal sanctions.

We can expect public sympathy to be on the side of law and order.

On 22 July 2011, not far from London, General Petraeus met Brigadier Simon Wolsey, commander of the British Army's 2 (South East) Brigade. Brig Wolsey worked at the Pentagon from 2006 to 2008. (General Petraeus tours Dover war tunnels) Also on 22 July 2011, Petraeus met US Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Barry Richard McCaffrey. Petraeus was also in the UK in March 2011.

The police seemed to let the London riots happen.

On the 14th of May, serious rioting took place in the Jakarta area.

There were no signs of any uniformed soldiers on the streets.

Over 1,000 people died during these Jakarta riots, most having been burnt in malls and supermarkets but some having been shot or beaten.

As a member of the Team of Volunteers for Humanitarian Causes he interviewed people who had witnessed the alleged involvement of the military in organising the riots and rapes.

A security officer alleged that Kopassus (special forces) officers had ordered the burning down of a bank.

A taxi driver reported hearing a man in a military helicopter encouraging people on the ground to carry out looting.

Shop-owners at a Plaza claimed that, before the riots, military officers tried to extract protection money.

A teenager claimed he and thousands of others had been trained as protesters.

1998

A street child alleged that Kopassus (US trained special forces) officers ordered him and and his friends to become rioters.

There was a report of soldiers being dressed up as students and then taking part in rioting.

Eyewitnesses spoke of muscular men with short haircuts arriving in military-style trucks and directing attacks on Chinese homes and businesses.

There were reports of children being encouraged to enter malls and then of the malls being set on fire.

There were allegations that muscular men with short haircuts had gang-raped little Chinese girls and then murdered some of them.

In Tottenham in London, the local Member of Parliament, David Lammy, has blamed people from outside the area for causing the riots.

The Daily Mail referred to unconfirmed reports that suggest a group of around 150 youths arrived in the north London suburb of Tottenham from 4 p.m.

Igor Gois, a Brixton resident and deputy manager at neighbouring Phones4u, said: "The police are saying that it is the youths that are doing this. But it’s not; it’s big men." (Streatham traders speak of riot drama)

Its bosses settled in the UK in the mid-1990s.

Gang members were involved in protection rackets and extortion in the UK, and were linked to up to 25 murders.

The gang's members were allowed to move from Turkey to London, allegedly after their leader, Huseyin Baybasin, agreed to tell Customs investigators what he knew about the involvement of senior Turkish politicians and officials in the international heroin trade.

Reportedly, Baybasin was encouraged by Customs to come to the UK and arrived via Gibraltar in either late 1994 or early 1995.

Having come to the UK, the Baybasin Cartel ran their vast drug trafficking operation from London.

Baybasin, 49, is now serving a life sentence in a Dutch jail.

His brother, Abdullah, 45, who took the helm after his conviction, has now been convicted of conspiracy to supply heroin.

It was at Abdullah Baybasin's asylum hearings that the alleged deal with Customs & Excise was disclosed.

Abdullah was given indefinite leave to remain in the UK last year.

Several other relatives also remain in the UK.

Michael Howard's cousin, Simon Bakerman, is an associate of Haase.

Bakerman was released from prison on the day Howard became leader of the Conservative Party in November 2003.

Bakerman received a three-year sentence in 2002 for running an illegal factory making amphetamine and ketamine pills.

Haase claims that Bakerman received large sums of money from Haase before the pardon was granted, though even his lawyers admit there is no evidence of where this money ended up - if it was paid in the first place.

Where Heroin comes from

The arms caches were a set-up, planted on Haase's instructions from a mobile phone he had smuggled into prison.

Witnesses from within Haase's organisation now claim that bribes totalling £4.5 million were paid by criminals to officials involved with the case.

Haase and his associates have often been held responsible for bringing gun culture to the streets of Liverpool.

One former senior Customs officer said there had been suspicions well before the release of the two men that the arms caches were an elaborate scam.

Haase was rearrested in 1999 and sentenced to 13 years for money-laundering and supplying firearms to fellow gangsters.

He is serving his sentence, but continues to wield a powerful influence from his prison cell, not least through his continuing claims that bribes were paid to help obtain his royal pardon.

Local people asked that Eddie Lyons be sacked as co-ordinator of Chirnsyde Community Initiative in Milton, north Glasgow.

Reportedly the Lyons’s family was involved in a 'war' with another group of alleged 'gangsters'.

At least 11 people have been shot since 2003 as a result of this 'war'.

In December 2006, the community centre was closed when Lyons’s nephew Michael was shot dead and his son Stephen and another man were critically injured.

In 2001 Eddie Lyons, his sons Stephen and Eddie junior, his brother Johnny and a friend called Paul McGuiness were charged with the attempted murder of Thomas McDonnell, who was attacked outside the community centre.

£63,000 was confiscated from Eddie Lyons’s home by police investigating alleged drug dealing.

In 2003, local parents were complaining that the council was forcing them to send their children to after-school fitness classes at Chirnsyde.

City Building spent thousands of pounds on hospitality.

When Labour ran the Edinburgh government, the Justice Minister was Labour's Cathy Jamieson.

Cathy Jamieson was Scotland's justice minister, under a former Labour administration.

On 13 November 2009, in the UK, it was announced that Gordon Brown's Labour Party had won the by-election in Glasgow North East.

The poll, in Labour's safest seat in Scotland, was caused by the resignation of the former Commons speaker, Michael Martin.

In 2005, Labour candidate Michael Martin took the seat with 15,153 votes. This time the Labour candidate, Willie Bain, took the seat with 12,231 votes.

The Scottish National Party came second with 4120 votes.

It is suspected that the Labour Party's Willie Bain may have benefited from vote fraud.

1. Police are investigating reports of voting fraud with multiple voting at polling stations.

At the St Denis's polling station, police were called in by staff after voters turned up to be told their vote has already been cast.

2. The Scotsman claims that over 6,000 people registered for postal votes in Glasgow North East, which is 10 percent of eligible voters.

When a boy is very sick he needs intensive care in a good hospital.

Some kids in the UK are very sick in terms of their behaviour.

But they are not getting intensive care.

Too often, Britain's schools, media and criminal justice system seem to be very sick indeed.

Too often, these institutions appear to be run by fools and crooks.

Many UK families seem sick.

On 19 September the Daily Mail had a report entitled: Feral youths: How a generation of violent, illiterate young men are living outside the boundaries of civilised society

Here are some of the points from the article:

1. According to the head of Scotland Yard's Violent Crime directorate, 'Serious youth violence is the biggest problem we have today...'

The number of violent crimes carried out by children and teenagers has increased by a third over a period of three years.

2. Many UK kids can barely read and write.

63% of white boys from low-income families are unable to read and write properly at 14.

54% of black boys from low income families cannot read or write properly at 14.

A black car mechanic, in his 50s, said: 'Back in the Caribbean, we were taught the three Rs, but that's gone out of the window. After that, everything breaks down.'

When the mechanic left school, he could pick from a range of factory jobs and apprenticeships. All gone now, he said.

In recent decades, the UK has closed down a lot of manufacturing industry.

And there has been a growth of immigration.

This has particularly affected white and black Caribbean boys from poor backgrounds.

Call centres, and other service sector jobs, require personal and social skills.

3. Fifteen year old Tuggy Tug has a young single mother.

She never disciplined him because he was ' bringing home the bacon' - up to £200 a day from running errands for older drug dealers.

4. 72% of children born to single mothers of any age will grow up in poverty.

5. More than a quarter of British children are now raised in single-parent families - and nine out of ten of them are headed by women.

6. According to research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Children with one parent, are more likely to have behavioural problems, to do less well at school, have sex earlier, suffer from depression and turn to drugs and heavy drinking.

According to evidence from the U.S., they are more likely to get involved with gangs and crime.

7. Four out of ten of these children will have no contact at all with their fathers by the age of three. For many boys, their first experience of spending any significant time with adult males is when they enter prison.

On 22 September, the Daily Mail had an article entitled: Lazy, illiterate teachers, cynical heads who have given up, and pupils who treat them with contempt.

Here are some of the points:

1. What is going wrong in primary schools?

A school inspector remarked: 'The child is put in a corner, surrounded by books and assumed to be able to read by osmosis.'

2. At most primary schools, children sit at tables scattered about the classroom. And they chat. There is an element of chaos.

The typical primary schools tends not to give intensive care to children who have not learnt to read or write.

3. At age 14, Darren was barely able to read and write.

He, and nine of his school chums, got involved in trashing bus shelters, stealing and selling cocaine.

Half the time, the police would let them go; otherwise they usually got away with a £50 fine.

Now Darren lives on benefits, despite being obviously bright.

Two of of his school chums are dead - one committed suicide in prison and the other smashed a stolen car into a bus shelter at 80mph.

Two are serving long prison sentences - one for stabbing someone in the neck.

The fifth is a 'very bad' alcoholic.

Three control the drug scene in the town.

Darren's closest friend, a gifted football player, is homeless and hooked on crack.

To the north of Afghanistan lie huge quantities of oil and gas. We want to control the oil, the gas and the pipelines.

When it comes to the threat of terrorist attacks on the streets of Britain, just remember that Britain has a long history of arming and using militant Moslem groups to carry out acts of terrorism.

Britain used militant Moslems in Sumatra to undermine Sukarno.

Britain used the Moslem Brotherhood to undermine nationalists in Egypt, Syria and Iran.

Some of Bin Laden's mujahadeen trained in Britain.

And the so-called mastermind of the London tube bombings, Mr Aswat, apparently worked for MI6 in the Balkans.

Our troops are making progress as they attempt to turn Afghanistan into an American colony.

And what about all these Pakis in your neighbourhood?

I can assure you that they are useful as cheap labour; and they mainly vote for Labour.

Some of our leading councillors are Pakis and they have done very well financially, thanks to us.

Among the points made by John Pilger (our comments in italics):

1. In the UK, there is currently a scandal concerning Members of Parliaments' tax evasion and fake mortgages.

This hides a deeper corruption which is linked to the politics of the USA.

2. British parliamentary democracy has been gradually destroyed.

As in the USA, the two main parties have almost identical policies

(eg support for the CIA, the Pentagon, Israel, American corporations, American Imperialism)

3. Many politicians are now revealed as personally crooked.

Their accomplices have been certain journalists and editors.

The public has been deceived by dishonest journalism and by opinion polls based on absurdly small samplings.

4. The lawless attack on Iraq, in 2003, was backed by the two main parties and by most of the media.

BBC journalist Andrew Marr (reportedly an agent of MI6) told BBC viewers that Blair had "said they would be able to take Baghdad without a bloodbath, and that in the end the Iraqis would be celebrating. And on both of those points he has been proved conclusively right."

5. "When Blair’s army finally retreated from Basra in May, it left behind, according to scholarly estimates, more than a million people dead, a majority of stricken, sick children, a contaminated water supply, a crippled energy grid and four million refugees.

"As for the 'celebrating' Iraqis, the vast majority, say Whitehall’s own surveys, want the invader out."

6. "And when Blair finally departed the House of Commons, MPs gave him a standing ovation – they who had refused to hold a vote on his criminal invasion or even to set up an inquiry into its lies, which almost three-quarters of the British population wanted."

7. Blair committed the crime of deliberately planning the invasion of a country.

This is 'the supreme international crime' for 'which the Nazi foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop was hanged at Nuremberg after proof of his guilt was located in German cabinet documents.'

In February 2009, Britain’s 'Justice' Secretary, Jack Straw, blocked publication of crucial cabinet minutes from March 2003 about the planning of the invasion of Iraq.

8. Parliament, the police and journalists are involved in the anti-democratic process.

On 9 April 2009, the BBC’s Newsnight programme "promoted the guilt of 12 'terrorists' arrested in a contrived media drama orchestrated by the Prime Minister himself."

All were later released without charge.

Is this the reason for The Telegraph newspaper telling us about the expenses of UK members of parliament?

Brown took the UK's troops out of Iraq.

"Right now the US president is angry at the UK's response ... to his call for more military aid in Afghanistan...

"Brown's decision to send just a temporary force of 700 British troops to join the 8,300 already in Helmand and provide security during the August election, fell way short of the thousands of troops Obama was hoping to get from the prime minister as the UK pulls out of Iraq.

"It also falls short of the 10,000 permanent troops British military chiefs insist is necessary to bring stability to the Helmand-Kandahar region..."

In the UK, the mainstream media has been attacking various top members of parliament because of their sleazy behaviour in regard to expenses.

The BBC has been particularly noisy in its criticism of Britain's legislators.

This might suggest that the media is not controlled by the security services.

But, the media still stays fairly silent on the big issues, such as 9 11, Lockerbie, the London Tube Bombings and various other acts reportedly carried out by cabals within the security services.

And, the whole expenses row begins to look like a psy-op designed to create a crisis, leading to fascism.

To bring about fascism you wreck the financial system and then the system of democracy.

There are indications that the 'global elite' may use chaos and fear to achieve their aims.

Events may be made to follow the same path as the Great Depression in 1929-1933:

Russia now claims that Christopher Bower is a senior officer in the British secret service.

Nicola Jones, writing in New Scientist, 19 November 2001, (Taliban nuclear documents mirror spoof article - 19 November 2001 ...) pointed out that 'Taliban nuclear documents' found by BBC reporter John Simpson were identical to a spoof article.

In 2001, John Simpson claimed he had found documents strewn on the floor of a Taliban recruitment centre in Kabul. He claimed these documents apparently described how to build a thermonuclear device.

The documents, according to Simpson showed "how dangerous Bin Laden's Al Qaeda network aspired to be".

According to the New Scientist:

The sentences shown in focus by the camera also come from a famous document called "Weekend Scientist: Let's Make a Thermonuclear Device", which was first published in 1979 as a humour piece by The Journal of Irreproducible Results.

The paper was written in response to US court decisions of the time that restricted popular magazines from detailing how to make a bomb. Since all the information is freely available in public libraries anyway, the author said, he decided to provide a humorous "ten easy steps" proving how easy bomb building can be.

While the gist of these instructions may be accurate, for example giving suggested relative proportions of plutonium and TNT, they are written completely in jest.

The first instruction tells readers to obtain weapons grade plutonium at their "local supplier". It continues: "A nuclear power plant is not recommended, as large quantities of missing plutonium tends to make plant engineers unhappy. We suggest you contact your local terrorist organization."

The US Department of Energy generally refuses to comment on the accuracy of such documents. But they do say that about five kilograms of plutonium is theoretically enough to make a nuclear explosive device, while the recipe in The Journal of Irreproducible Results calls for 110 kilograms of plutonium.

The BBC film only allows a few parts of the documents to be read, but these few phrases are exactly as found in the 1979 paper: "Theory of operation ... the device basically works when ... critical mass then produces a nuclear chain reaction ... Plutonium (PU), atomic number ... and is similar in ...".

"From what I've seen, this is certainly a shortened version of the original article," says Marc Abrahams, former editor of The Journal of Irreproducible Results.

Some of the more obviously absurd parts of the original are missing from the document in Kabul, such as a paragraph starting "in next month's column, we will learn how to clone your neighbor's wife in six easy steps." The Kabul document also has paragraph returns in odd places, as if someone had cut and pasted the text.

Even so, says Abrahams, "if you spend half a second scanning any of this you should be able to tell it's a joke." He adds that if the instructions were made more believable by removing the ridiculous parts, there would be practically nothing left.

Reportedly, John Simpson was a university friend of a former head of MI6.

HACKS AND SPOOKS

And so to Nottingham University (on Sunday 26 February) for a well-attended conference...

I focus in my talk on the links between journalists and the intelligence services:

While it might be difficult to identify precisely the impact of the spooks (variously represented in the press as “intelligence”, “security”, “Whitehall” or “Home Office” sources) on mainstream politics and media, from the limited evidence it looks to be enormous.

As Roy Greenslade, media specialist at the Telegraph (formerly the Guardian), commented:

"Most tabloid newspapers - or even newspapers in general - are playthings of MI5."

Bloch and Fitzgerald, in their examination of covert UK warfare, report the editor of “one of Britain’s most distinguished journals” as believing that more than half its foreign correspondents were on the MI6 payroll.

And in 1991, Richard Norton-Taylor revealed in the Guardian that 500 prominent Britons paid by the CIA and the now defunct Bank of Commerce and Credit International, included 90 journalists.

In their analysis of the contemporary secret state, Dorril and Ramsay gave the media a crucial role. The heart of the secret state they identified as the security services, the cabinet office and upper echelons of the Home and Commonwealth Offices, the armed forces and Ministry of Defence, the nuclear power industry and its satellite ministries together a network of senior civil servants.

As “satellites” of the secret state, their list included “agents of influence in the media, ranging from actual agents of the security services, conduits of official leaks, to senior journalists merely lusting after official praise and, perhaps, a knighthood at the end of their career”.

Phillip Knightley, author of a seminal history of the intelligence services, has even claimed that at least one intelligence agent is working on every Fleet Street newspaper.

A brief history

Going as far back as 1945, George Orwell no less became a war correspondent for the Observer - probably as a cover for intelligence work. Significantly most of the men he met in Paris on his assignment, Freddie Ayer, Malcolm Muggeridge, Ernest Hemingway were either working for the intelligence services or had close links to them.

Stephen Dorril, in his seminal history of MI6, reports that Orwell attended a meeting in Paris of resistance fighters on behalf of David Astor, his editor at the Observer and leader of the intelligence service’s unit liasing with the French resistance.

The release of Public Record Office documents in 1995 about some of the operations of the MI6-financed propaganda unit, the Information Research Department of the Foreign Office, threw light on this secret body - which even Orwell aided by sending them a list of “crypto-communists”. Set up by the Labour government in 1948, it “ran” dozens of Fleet Street journalists and a vast array of news agencies across the globe until it was closed down by Foreign Secretary David Owen in 1977.

According to John Pilger in the anti-colonial struggles in Kenya, Malaya and Cyprus, IRD was so successful that the journalism served up as a record of those episodes was a cocktail of the distorted and false in which the real aims and often atrocious behaviour of the British intelligence agencies was hidden.

And spy novelist John le Carré, who worked for MI6 between 1960 and 1964, has made the amazing statement that the British secret service then controlled large parts of the press – just as they may do today.

In 1975, following Senate hearings on the CIA, the reports of the Senate’s Church Committee and the House of Representatives’ Pike Committee highlighted the extent of agency recruitment of both British and US journalists.

And sources revealed that half the foreign staff of a British daily were on the MI6 payroll.

David Leigh, in The Wilson Plot, his seminal study of the way in which the secret service smeared through the mainstream media and destabilised the Government of Harold Wilson before his sudden resignation in 1976, quotes an MI5 officer: “We have somebody in every office in Fleet Street”

Leaker King

And the most famous whistleblower of all, Peter (Spycatcher) Wright, revealed that MI5 had agents in newspapers and publishing companies whose main role was to warn them of any forthcoming “embarrassing publications”.

Wright also disclosed that the Daily Mirror tycoon, Cecil King, “was a longstanding agent of ours” who “made it clear he would publish anything MI5 might care to leak in his direction”.

Selective details about Wilson and his secretary, Marcia Falkender, were leaked by the intelligence services to sympathetic Fleet Street journalists. Wright comments: “No wonder Wilson was later to claim that he was the victim of a plot”. King was also closely involved in a scheme in 1968 to oust Prime Minister Harold Wilson and replace him with a coalition headed by Lord Mountbatten.

Hugh Cudlipp, editorial director of the Mirror from 1952 to 1974, was also closely linked to intelligence, according to Chris Horrie, in his recently published history of the newspaper.

David Walker, the Mirror’s foreign correspondent in the 1950s, was named as an MI6 agent following a security scandal while another Mirror journalist, Stanley Bonnet, admitted working for MI5 in the 1980s investigating the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Maxwell and Mossad

According to Stephen Dorril, intelligence gathering during the miners’ strike of 1984-85 was helped by the fact that during the 1970s MI5’s F Branch had made a special effort to recruit industrial correspondents – with great success.

In 1991, just before his mysterious death, Mirror proprietor Robert Maxwell was accused by the US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh of acting for Mossad, the Israeli secret service, though Dorril suggests his links with MI6 were equally as strong.

Following the resignation from the Guardian of Richard Gott, its literary editor in December 1994 in the wake of allegations that he was a paid agent of the KGB, the role of journalists as spies suddenly came under the media spotlight – and many of the leaks were fascinating.

For instance, according to The Times editorial of 16 December 1994: “Many British journalists benefited from CIA or MI6 largesse during the Cold War.”

The intimate links between journalists and the secret services were highlighted in the autobiography of the eminent newscaster Sandy Gall. He reports without any qualms how, after returning from one of his reporting assignments to Afghanistan, he was asked to lunch by the head of MI6. “It was very informal, the cook was off so we had cold meat and salad with plenty of wine. He wanted to hear what I had to say about the war in Afghanistan. I was flattered, of course, and anxious to pass on what I could in terms of first-hand knowledge.”

And in January 2001, the renegade MI6 officer, Richard Tomlinson, claimed Dominic Lawson, the editor of the Sunday Telegraph and son of the former Tory chancellor, Nigel Lawson, provided journalistic cover for an MI6 officer on a mission to the Baltic to handle and debrief a young Russian diplomat who was spying for Britain.

Lawson strongly denied the allegations.

Similarly in the reporting of Northern Ireland, there have been longstanding concerns over security service disinformation. Susan McKay, Northern editor of the Dublin-based Sunday Tribune, has criticised the reckless reporting of material from “dodgy security services”. She told a conference in Belfast in January 2003 organised by the National Union of Journalists and the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission: “We need to be suspicious when people are so ready to provide information and that we are, in fact, not being used.” (www.nuj.org.uk/inner.php?docid=635)

Growing power of secret state

Thus from this evidence alone it is clear there has been a long history of links between hacks and spooks in both the UK and US.

But as the secret state grows in power, through massive resourcing, through a whole raft of legislation – such as the Official Secrets Act, the anti-terrorism legislation, the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and so on – and as intelligence moves into the heart of Blair’s ruling clique so these links are even more significant.

Since September 11 all of Fleet Street has been awash in warnings by anonymous intelligence sources of terrorist threats.

According to former Labour minister Michael Meacher, much of this disinformation was spread via sympathetic journalists by the Rockingham cell within the MoD.

A parallel exercise, through the office of Special Plans, was set up by Donald Rumsfeld in the US. Thus there have been constant attempts to scare people – and justify still greater powers for the national security apparatus.

Similarly the disinformation about Iraq’s WMD was spread by dodgy intelligence sources via gullible journalists.

Thus, to take just one example, Michael Evans, The Times defence correspondent, reported on 29 November 2002: “Saddam Hussein has ordered hundred of his officials to conceal weapons of mass destruction components in their homes to evade the prying eyes of the United Nations inspectors.” The source of these “revelations” was said to be “intelligence picked up from within Iraq”. Early in 2004, as the battle for control of Iraq continued with mounting casualties on both sides, it was revealed that many of the lies about Saddam Hussein’s supposed WMD had been fed to sympathetic journalists in the US, Britain and Australia by the exile group, the Iraqi National Congress.

Sexed up – and missed out

During the controversy that erupted following the end of the “war” and the death of the arms inspector Dr David Kelly (and the ensuing Hutton inquiry) the spotlight fell on BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan and the claim by one of his sources that the government (in collusion with the intelligence services) had “sexed up” a dossier justifying an attack on Iraq.

The Hutton inquiry, its every twist and turn massively covered in the mainstream media, was the archetypal media spectacle that drew attention from the real issue: why did the Bush and Blair governments invade Iraq in the face of massive global opposition? But those facts will be forever secret.

Significantly, too, the broader and more significant issue of mainstream journalists’ links with the intelligence services was ignored by the inquiry.

Significantly, on 26 May 2004, the New York Times carried a 1,200-word editorial admitting it had been duped in its coverage of WMD in the lead-up to the invasion by dubious Iraqi defectors, informants and exiles (though it failed to lay any blame on the US President: see Greenslade 2004). Chief among The Times’ dodgy informants was Ahmad Chalabi, leader of the Iraqi National Congress and Pentagon favourite before his Baghdad house was raided by US forces on 20 May.

Then, in the Observer of 30 May 2004, David Rose admitted he had been the victim of a “calculated set-up” devised to foster the propaganda case for war. “In the 18 months before the invasion of March 2003, I dealt regularly with Chalabi and the INC and published stories based on interviews with men they said were defectors from Saddam’s regime.” And he concluded: “The information fog is thicker than in any previous war, as I know now from bitter personal experience. To any journalist being offered apparently sensational disclosures, especially from an anonymous intelligence source, I offer two words of advice: caveat emptor.”

Let’s not forget no British newspaper has followed the example of the NYT and apologised for being so easily duped by the intelligence services in the run up to the illegal invasion of Iraq.

The UK's most vulnerable Labour MP, Russell Brown.

In 2001, the Labour MP for Dumfries and Galloway, Russell Brown, was 'caught breaking parliamentary rules' by claiming office expenses to which he was 'not entitled'.

Reportedly, Russell Brown had the rent for his constituency office paid in full but also received rent from the MSP Elaine Murray.

Brown at that time was a member of the Westminster Standards Committee.

Brown's constituency, which is very marginal, has previously been held by the SNP.

Brown supported the Iraq war, supports identity cards, supports government policy on post offices, supports the terrorism laws and supports Trident.

He has been a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Lord Drayson and Des Browne.

It is expected that most Labour voters will switch to the SNP at the next election.

However, there could be vote fraud?

The UK Labour Party has been choosing candidates for certain parts of the UK.

There is a suspicion that friends of Blair have been selected as candidates thanks to fraudulent 'postal votes'.

1. On 18 April 2009, the UK media reported on 'voting irregularities' in a candidate selection process which could lead to the daughter of one of Tony Blair’s 'cronies' being given a safe seat.

"It was discovered that the seal on a ballot box containing previously received ballot papers for the selection of Labour's parliamentary candidate for Erith and Thamesmead was broken."

Georgia Gould, 22, is the daughter of 'one of the architects of New Labour', Philip Gould.

There have been reports that Ms Gould’s campaign has been giving out postal vote forms "pre-filled with voters’ names, addresses and telephone numbers."
